Getting Started

A Guide on How To:  Find Research Material;
Determine Its Appropriateness;
and Properly Cite It

To complete the written components of this course you need to be able to:
1) search the appropriate places for information;
2) evaluate that information to be sure that it is academic in nature; and
3) properly cite your information source using the APA citation method.

Researching:
First, simply doing a basic Google or Bing search for material that will substantiate your position WILL NOT do. You need to use the correct resources to find the credible scholarly literature that is required.

Your SCF Librarians suggest using the following databases:
Academic Search Complete Demo - Go to Academic Search Complete (EBSCO)
JSTOR
Demo - Go to JSTOR
Social Sciences Full Text
 Demo - Go to Social Sciences Full Text ( EBSCO)

These two videos demonstrate two other ways to find Scholarly Journal Articles using SCF Library Resources.

How to use Google Scholar to find an SCF Full Text Article:

Also, at the bottom of every Lesson in ANGEL you will find a link to a document named Web Resources. This should direct you to a variety of information that you should be able to use. As some of the sites or information on them may not be scholarly, when in any doubt, go through the criteria for evaluating Web pages or ask.
