According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Ageism is defined as the prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age; age discrimination, esp. against the elderly. It was first 'identified' only in 1969.

Adults have been and remain marginalized in academic institutions because of the persistence of a deeply rooted culture bias. This work analyzes the current state of the adult student experience in higher education, exploring the organizational, instructional, and interpersonal barriers that adults face in reaching their educational goals. Using applied critical and postmodern theory, the author explores the hypothesis that adults are at-risk in higher education settings because of such bias. The book includes an extensive review and critique of the literature and of contemporary adult programs and practices. Choosing Keywords
SCF and many other academic libraries organize 'Keywords', terms or 'subject headings' to help organize items that are similar in subject. It creates a shared vocabulary among libraries, helping users discover more sources related to a particular topic. Think of it as "hashtags" that we used since before hashtags existed!
However, keep in mind that this shared vocabularies can be a product of society, based within a historically white profession and culture. Some terms are dated and might be offensive or inappropriate for current standards. There are librarians involved in social justice work who seek to disband antiquated and offensive terms, but that is a work in progress.
"Keywords" evolve over time as research develops.
Originally, Ageism only referred to the elderly, now it includes age discrimination at all ages.
Remember, when you find a good article, ebook, evideo or website, keep track of the 'keywords' used in the source, or author names and search using those terms too. Different databases use different 'keywords' so rotating and trying different terms is important.
