Capitalization

APA Style is known as "down" style, meaning that words are lowercase unless there is specific guidance to capitalize them.

Title Case:

In titles, capitalize the following:

  • The first word of the title, including "The" or "A"
  • First word of a subtitle
  • First word after colon, em dash, or end punctuation in a heading
  • Words of 4 letters or more (With, From..)

Keep lowercase:

  • Short conjunctions (and, as, but...)
  • Articles (a, an, the)
  • Short Prepositions (as, at, by...)

Reports In-Text vs References Page:

When writing out report titles in-text, capitalize every major word.

When writing out report titles on the References page, use Title Case.

Example:

In-Text: In the report People With a Higher Risk of Food Poisoning, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] (2019) mention adults aged 65 and older, children younger than 5 years, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.
