Spring 2024 Workshops Menu

NEW at SCF Libraries! 

Now Faculty can request workshops on specific topics at specific times of the semester, to match your students' needs, based on when their assignments are due!

3 easy steps:

  1. Select the topic and the modality (remote, hybrid or in person).
  2. Propose the weeks or approximate days to be offered.
  3. Submit your request.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Define plagiarism.
  • Recognize the parts of a citation.
  • Cite basic sources (book, article, website) correctly in MLA documentation style.
APA Citations Quick overview of what APA style is, how to cite basic sources, and hands-on practice on citing using APA. 

ACRL Framework: Information Has Value.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Define plagiarism.
  • Recognize the parts of a citation.
  • Cite basic sources (book, article, website) correctly in APA documentation style.

Library Hacks

Research with Databases

Quick overview of "top secret search techniques" in a general research database such as EBSCO Academic Search Complete, or similar. (Specific databases can be requested).

ACRL Framework: Research as Inquiry - Searching as Strategic Exploration

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Identify one specific database (pre-determined) and its recommended uses.
  • Access the database and perform a basic search.
  • Retrieve one full-text article and send it to their email.
Identifying Scholarly Articles Overview of what a "scholarly article" is, how to search for them in the SCF Library databases, and how to use them in scholarly assignments.

ACRL Framework: Authority is constructed and contextual.

SLO: After completing this workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the parameters of a scholarly article.
  • Differentiate between scholarly and reliable sources.
  • Understand how to utilize scholarly articles in research.
Fake News & Media Literacy Brief presentation and practice on recognizing scams, propaganda and "fake news."

ACRL Framework: Authority is constructed and contextual

Student Learning Outcomes: After completing this workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize different categories of misleading information,
  • Practice strategies for detecting distortions in how information is presented to them
  • Use best practices for thoughtful consumption of media and sharing of information.
Google Do's and Don't's Brief presentation and practice on how to get the most of Google searching.

ACRL Framework: Searching as Strategic Exploration

Student Learning Outcomes: After completing this workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Search Google more efficiently,
  • Understand how Google search works,
  • Use other Google applications.
Custom option Specific topic based on demand: Collaborate with a librarian to design a workshop for a specific assignment or topic not covered here. Varies

In person (face-to-face)

Workshop takes place in the Library. Highly interactive.

Students can bring their work in progress.

Remote (online)

Workshop is live, but in MS TEAMS.

Not recorded. Interactive. Attendees and librarian can share screen to show work.

Hybrid

Workshop takes place Face-to-face but it is broadcasted in TEAMS.

Remote attendees can see and hear the F2F presentation.

More interaction with attendees in person than those online.
